Discovering Art in UdaipurThe beautiful city of Udaipur is situated in the state of Rajasthan and is often referred to as the ‘Venice of the East’. The backdrop of the lakes and the magical sunsets, combined with a rich and interesting history make it a popular destination for tourists. Despite this, it has been able to resist the commercialism and over-development seen elsewhere.

Most of the old part of Udaipur is built on the shores of Lake Pichola and it’s here that you will find most of the city’s attractions. Take a boat trip and visit the island and former palace in the middle of the lake (made famous by the James Bond film, Octopussy). Spend some time walking aimlessly around the small lanes while observing the locals going about their business. Whatever you choose to do, Udaipur will undoubtedly be one of the most relaxing and charming cities you will visit in India.

The City Palace

This is the principal royal complex in the state of Rajasthan and it towers over the shore of Pichola Lake. The major part of the palace now serves as an interesting and informative museum that displays a diverse collection of artifacts. The armory museum is home to a huge collection of special weapons.

The Crystal Gallery

This stunning attraction can be found in the Fateh Prakash Palace and has a collection of crystals ordered by the Maharana Sajjan Singh from England. The maharaja died before they arrived and all the items stayed packed up in boxes for over one hundred years. The extravagant collection includes sofa sets, a dining table, decanters, perfume bottles, and an exquisite jewel studded carpet.

Jagdish Temple

This magnificent temple can be found north of the City Palace. The intricately carved interior of the temple has some exquisite carvings as well as several smaller shrines that are dedicated to Lord Ganesh, Shiva, and the Sun God.
